Learn how to make a delicious, from scratch condiment with this homemade hummus recipe!
Hummus is one of those delicious dips that takes me back to our time in the Middle East. The Middle East is known for it’s good food and hospitality!
I love the versatility of hummus…I can use it as a sandwich spread, a dip for veggies, or a sauce on a wrap. It is tasty AND nutrient dense. Those garbonzo beans or chickpea add a punch of protein to your meal.
I have one child in particular who isn’t a huge meat eater, but loves hummus. I still want to make sure he is eating enough protein, so I offer him hummus whenever he wants it!
Now, if you have been following this blog, you know that I am not a fan of pre-packaged food. I only trust what comes out of my garden and kitchen! With that being said, I am not wild about buying the hummus at the store. Something about coming from a factory really turns me off. Not to mention, I don’t have a clue of the quality of ingredients and where they came from.
But fear not, I just happen to have an easy hummus recipe for you to try!
Tools for making Hummus
The only real tool you need is a blender. The blender helps to make the chickpeas nice and smooth. In the video, I discuss the difference between a food processor vs. a blender.
Additional tools that can be helpful are an immersion blender. Once it is time to add other ingredients, the blender can get stuck in the blending process. I like to spoon out the smooth chickpea mixture into a bowl and use an immersion blender to blend the remaining ingredients.
Hummus Ingredients
- Dried Garbanzo beans/Chickpea (you can use canned chickpea but I wouldn’t trust the aluminum can)
- Lemon juice
- Salt (I use Himalayan salt)
- Sesame Tahini
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Cumin
- Garlic
A note to remember, your food is only as good as the ingredients, so make sure the ingredients you buy are quality (organic, not in a can, etc.).

How to store Hummus
Okay guys, one of the things I love about this recipe is that I can make a huge batch of it and freeze it. That’s right, hummus freezes really well! I simply spoon the hummus into a mason jar, leaving 1/3 of headspace at the top and pop a plastic lid on it. Place the jar in the freezer and thaw as needed. I make 8-10 jars of hummus at a time. It is so easy to pull the jar out of the freezer and thaw it in the fridge or on the counter.
If you’re not looking to freeze it and want to make smaller batches, the hummus will keep in the fridge for at least a week and a half.
