Apple season is upon us and I have been whirling around the kitchen preserving these end of summer fruits. And, of course, applesauce has been at the top of my list. I love being able to pull a jar of homemade applesauce off the shelf in winter, especially when one of us is sick. I don’t know if this is true in your house, but my wonderful husband, although gifted in many areas, is uncomfortable in the kitchen. It is always helpful to have a trusty jar of applesauce for him to open when I am sick and unable to make it myself.
Okay, you say, but you really could just buy a jar of applesauce at the store. It wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. No, it wouldn’t, but I will admit, I am an applesauce snob. I no longer have it in me to force down that store bought stuff they label “applesauce.” There is a depth of flavor and a medley of complimentary spices that puts homemade applesauce in a whole different category. Trust me!
This recipe is super easy and if you have a crock pot or instant pot it really is a set it and forget it kind of deal. So, let’s dive in shall we?
Ingredients…
- apples
- water
- cinnamon
- nutmeg
Easy Delicious Applesauce
The first thing you want to do is peel and core the apples.
I highly recommend buying an apple peeler/core,r like this one, if you are doing a large batch of sauce, it will save your precious fingers from endless amounts of peeling. Apparently, I was born with weak fingers because mine give out peeling at like number five, and for applesauce that just doesn’t cut it. You need a lot of apples! Okay, moving on.
Take those peeled and cored apples and run your fingers on the inside to check for any hard places where the seeds hung out. Nobody likes mysterious hard pieces in their applesauce.
Toss all of your slices, a little water and some spices of your choice (I typically sprinkle in cinnamon and nutmeg) into a a crock pot. I typically put it on high for about 2 1/2 hrs. Your cooking times will differ based on how many apples you’re cooking and what temperature it is set on.
When they are soft (some may even be falling apart) I like to take an immersion blender and blend until smooth. If you like it chunky then skip the immersion blender and mash with a potato masher. Whatever tickles your fancy!
Now taste that beautiful homemade goodness, savor the glorious smell of your kitchen and promise me you will never go back to store bought!
How to can Easy Delicious Applesauce
Canning applesauce is super easy too!
Make sure you sterilize your jars and lids first.
I use Harvest Guard Re-usable Canning Lids, you can see it in the picture. These lids are amazing, they seal well and I can use them over and over again. They come in two sizes, regular or wide mouth, and they are made in America (this makes me sooo happy). Another perk is when all the stores were sold out of lids during the pandemic, it was no problem, I was in the clear with my re-usable lids. Click here to check them out or order some for yourself!
Okay back to the canning…
Then, ladle the hot applesauce into hot jars.
Wipe the rims of the jar and plop those lids on (in the proper canning way of course) and screw on the bands.
Boil your jars in a hot water bath 20 minutes for quart size jars.
Congratulations, not only did you make the best applesauce you have ever tasted, you preserved it for a future indulgence!
